What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is the application of various hand techniques with the aim being to alleviate the stress and tension that accumulates in soft tissues.

Sports massage is not just for athletes, anyone can benefit. The aim of sports massage is to correct imbalances in soft tissue which generally arise from repetitive and strenuous activity. Triggers can include but are not exclusive to; stress, occupation, posture and day to day activities e.g. walking the dog.

What should I expect from my Sports Massage?

You will initially be asked about your general health, any previous injuries, occupation and your activity level/sport. Following the initial questions you will be asked what area you would like to be massaged and what problems, if any, you are experiencing with this area.

The massage will begin with light palpation of the area to feel for areas of tension. The therapist will then gradually work deeper into the tissues depending on the findings. Communication will be maintained throughout to ensure that you are comfortable, the pressure being applied is appropriate, and that any specific areas of pain are identified.

On conclusion of the massage the therapist may give you advice on further treatment, any stretches that may help you and to ensure you drink plenty of water following the massage.
